Reflexology Verses Amma

Foot Reflexology and Amma are both ancient forms of alternative healing and similar in application. They provide alternative healing through muscle and joint manipulation. However, there are many differences between the two. Reflexology of the feet originated in Egypt 2330BC. This is a healing massage technique, which attempts to stave off infections or repair tissues and organs of the body. This is achieved by increasing circulation to designated areas that an individual wants to improve. In reflexology the body is divided into 10 zones. Within these zones there are various tissues and organs of the body whose location on the feet are in relation to these zones and their corresponding nerve endings. One theory in Reflexology is that acid crystalline deposits collect on nerve endings in the feet. Once the nerve endings are clear of acid crystalline deposits so is the problem one might be having physically. Your feet are an exact blue print of the body from head (toes) to heel (rectum). Pinpoint accuracy in knowing the reflex road map of the foot and location of each organ and parts of the body is imperative. For example, once the hip or gall bladder can be identified on the foot, massaging the area is the next step. This massage is applied with mostly the thumb and index finger in an attempt to eliminate the acid crystalline deposits built up on the nerve endings. The massage can also be utilized by applying pressure to specific spots on the feet to stimulate areas and organs in various parts of the body. This is much like the 14 meridians used in Amma. (Benjamin& Tappan, 2005; Gillanders, 2007)

The following are additional benefits to massaging or pressing various points on the foot. Massaging or pressing at the center of the big toe stimulates the pituitary gland, as well as when massaging or pressing just above the ankle on both sides. This stimulates relief from hemorrhoids. Massaging or pressing the right foot heel area stimulates the colon, bladder, small intestines, and sciatic nerve. In addition, massaging or pressing the left foot center of the plantar area is the heart and center of the arch area is the kidney, pancreas, and stomach. (Benjamin& Tappan, 2005)

Some applications of reflexology are not advisable under certain circumstances called contraindications, such as a person in severe pain. Pregnant women’s feet are to be avoided during pregnancy because of the potential of stimulating uterine contractions. Areas of numbness due to diabetes should be avoided. There can also be indicators of heart and circulation problems in individuals whose feet do not spring back after pressure has been applied. This can be the result of a build up of proteins and fluid in the tissues. If the person has gout it is vital that their feet are not touched, especially the big toe. Also avoid the feet if there are any signs of acute inflammation or if the person is under the influence of alcohol. These precautions are essential in preventing further discomfort and increasing the likelihood of a cure, which is the ultimate goal of Reflexology. Amma, on the other hand, focuses on tissue relaxation with limited healing qualities. (Stone & Shell, 2007)

Amma, meaning “calm by rubbing”, is a traditional Japanese massage that originated in China. This technique is similar to foot reflexology in that it identifies specific points of healing. However, Amma identifies points on the whole body, which can affect a cure.

There are many more similarities to Reflexology and Amma. The effect of Amma is similar to reflexology in that it divides the body, not into zones, but into 14 meridians and 140 occupoints. Amma is also like reflexology in its attempt is to improve circulation of blood and lymph. Both forms of massage are geared to helping the body to heal itself and are maintenance programs. However, reflexology goes one step beyond and specifies organs and their congestion more accurately. Reflexology can also pinpoint organ problems and their healing. (Benjamin& Tappan, 2005)

Additional similarities include the use of hands, thumbs, fingers, and fists. However, when applying Amma, more appendages are used, including elbows and feet. In fact, Amma incorporates Kata, a system to stimulate the meridians and acupressure points in a certain order. Kata includes 25 techniques, which takes about an hour and will leave its recipient on the way to wellness. Some examples of the Kata techniques include: 1. Warm up/ light effeurage; 2. Knuckling; 3. Friction; 4. Tappoment. Warm up or light effeurage is used to warm up the skin and muscles and have a soothing effect on tense muscles. Knuckling is the back of the fingers on the fist to massage the back. Kneading uses a two handed squeeze of the muscles, like the thigh, or one handed kneading on biceps. Friction is the squeezing of the skin between your fingers to specifically work the muscles or tissue. Tappoment is a form used at the end of the massage. It is a percussion action of the ulna sides of both hands or fingers to bounce off the skin in rapid sequence to stimulate body tissues. (Benjamin& Tappan, 2005)

Amma, unlike reflexology, has more contraindications, since it is involved in more areas of the body, some of which are more vulnerable than others. Contraindications include people under severe distress, acute inflammation, recent surgery, burns, artificial joints, heart problems, and stroke victims, areas of bleeding or edema and persons under the influence of alcohol. For example, deep pressure massage should be avoided around endangerment areas like the anterior neck, because of the nerves, larynx, and thyroid gland. Special care should also be taken around the vertebral column, kidney area, eyes, and groin area. The prone position should not be utilized if the recipient is suffering from headaches, sinus problems or allergies, pain in groin area and legs. It is important to avoid placing pressure on the spinous process of the vertebrae because of fragile nerve endings. If the recipient is experiencing nausea or chest pains they should be advised to see a doctor. It is important to be careful under the arms of someone who has had lymph nodes removed. In addition, it is essential that one never apply finger pressure in a jarring or abrupt way, especially around kidneys. Avoid areas of broken skin or scars. Never use abdominal massage as many disease conditions can exist for a number of months before the receiver is aware of the problem2. Individuals with these conditions can experience the benefits of a massage; however, massages need to be modified and precautions need to be taken. (Stone & Shell, 2007)

Another aspect of Amma is the use of necessary tools and equipment. The equipment is a table with sheets and towels for draping the receiver to cover sensitive areas and provide a platform to perform the full body massage. On the other hand, reflexology only requires a chair for the receiver and a chair for the professional. (Stone & Shell, 2007)
